ABSTRACT

We have been unable to avoid correlating primordial utterances with certain psychological states, usually referred to as ‘meaning.’ Before passing on to the exact determination of primordial utterances we must consider what the term ‘meaning’ denotes. To keep off the slippery ground on our way, we must beware of confusing the protean ‘meanings of meaning.’ 1 We propose to base our deliberation on the fundamental space-time relationship between objects or events. In so far as we focus our attention on one of these we say with regard to other events that the one in the focus of attention has a ‘meaning’ Thus the area enclosed by a given .circle in Fig. 11 comprises all the objects or events that are somehow related to the event thought to form the centre of the circle.
