ABSTRACT

The situation in India is that there are laws governing legal deposit, the Press and Registration of Books Act 1867, latest amendment 1983; and the Delivery of Books and Newspapers Act 1954 as amended by Act 99 of 1956. The Act of 1954 calls on publishers to deposit three copies of each publication produced. The three depositories are the National Library, Calcutta, Connemara Public Library, Madras, and the Central Library, Bombay. The copy delivered to the National Library must be of the best quality published, and those deposited with the other statutory depositories should be on the paper on which the largest numbers of copies are printed for sale. The Tamil Nadu central library and state depository is the Connemara Public Library, in Madras, which receives four copies of publications produced in the state. The fifth copy is to be disposed of by the state government.
