ABSTRACT

The New Zealand legal deposit provision is in its Copyright Act of 1962 as amended by the Copyright Amendment Act 1971. This legal deposit provision, section 64, like that in the UK, has nothing to do with copyright protection or with copyright registration. In New Zealand the publisher is responsible for delivering at his own expense three copies of every publication to the National Librarian. However, if a publication does not bear the name of the publisher, the printer, as well as the publisher are jointly responsible for complying with the law. The publisher is supposed to deliver three copies of the best copies published, together with any prints and maps, bound. The penalty for non-delivery is a fine not exceeding 100 New Zealand dollars.
