ABSTRACT

Legal deposit in the UK is based on the Copyright Act 1911, s. 15. However, this section has nothing whatsoever to do with copyright registration, since in UK copyright law is intrinsic in the work and there is no need for registration, according to the Berne Convention. Government documents are deposited under the 1911 Act and under an internal government ruling General Notice GEN 75/50, Supply of departmental publications to privileged libraries. Legal deposit copies destined for the British Library are sent to the newly renamed Legal Deposit Office, now located in Boston Spa, Wetherby, West Yorkshire. The exceptions are: plays already published in the UK; rehearsals; plays which are produced to enable a record or cinematographic film to be made from or by means of the production; to enable the performance to be broadcast; to enable the performance to be included in a cable programme.
