ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to describe the roles and functions of student affairs and college counseling within the framework of the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs standards and practice guidelines. It describes what are the traditional functional areas within student affairs, including college counseling services, and discusses them within a holistic framework of college student affairs. College counseling is one of the four traditional student affairs units and, for the reason; it has a long and rich history on college campuses. College counseling helps students restore or return to a holistic equilibrium using a host of direct clinical services and applied learning resources whenever severe mental health issues, such as suicidal ideation or crippling anxieties, interfere with a student’s capacity to engage with peers in social settings and participate in classroom activities. The American College Counseling Association reported that students on college campuses show an increasing complexity of presenting mental health needs.
