ABSTRACT

The purpose of counseling is to empower the client, whatever age, to cope with life, to make effective decisions, and to participate in growth-enhancing activities. Counselors, through the structure they use, teach their clients at least indirectly a process for handling their concerns as well as directly helping them finds ways to manage problems and develop their resources and opportunities. A school counselor, for example, might call a student into his office either to get acquainted at the beginning of the school year or as a referral from a teacher. The counselor must gather enough specific and concrete information to make an accurate appraisal and develop a treatment plan that will help the client to function more successfully. Counselor and client review what occurred over the course of the counseling experience and examine how problems have been reduced or changed and in what ways the client will cope with similar issues or life’s exigencies in the future.
