ABSTRACT

The Kenya Adult Education Programme is a general adult education programme involving literacy/numeracy and basic compensatory education. Kenya's Adult Education Programme is an important part of the government's effort to satisfy the basic needs of the population through the National Development Plan. The Kenya programme uses the participatory discussion method in all its activities: initial planning, curriculum and material development, teaching methods, and monitoring. For purposes of coordination, several nonformal adult education programmes are in principle under the supervision of the Adult Education Programme. Traditional culture has had both positive and negative effects on the programme. The enthusiasm with which women in particular participated in the self-help projects, which in almost all adult literacy classes run side by side with literacy, can be seen as proof of the relevance of the programme. Mobilisation and participation of women have been realised through the programme.
