ABSTRACT

Turkey has a long tradition as a maritime country with many centuries’ history of ship operation and port activity, located as it is at the centre of early civilisation and the later developments of the economy of the Mediterranean. The maritime sector in Turkey is highly diverse and displays examples of all kinds of activity from bulk, liner and ferry shipping, through all types of port activity, to the ancillary sectors including broking, finance, law, agency and freight forwarding. The most manifestation of the significance has come with the privatisation of the sector and the problems faced by the government in the remaining phases of transition with particular respect to the state shipping lines and the remaining state ports. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
