ABSTRACT

The shipbuilding industry thus forms a significant part of the maritime sector, and has close relations with the wider manufacturing and assembling industry. There are various targets for the development of the Turkish shipbuilding industry. It is known that if the current capacity of the Turkish shipyards is increased through technical improvements, the economic situation of the industry also be improved. The total utilisation capacity within the shipbuilding industry in the world has declined following the freight crisis and decrease in the availability of loans after 1985. Shipbuilding in Turkish shipyards has been carried out using some relatively up to date technology but many of the shipyards have not yet reached the highest international standards. Turkey is a major manufacturer of steel and therefore, has shown a serious interest in the scrapping industry for recycled material in steel production. The ship repair industry in Turkey has been under rapid development and growth similar to many other industries in the country.
