ABSTRACT

Turkey is located on both the continents of Europe and Asia and has as neighbours a number of Eastern European, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Former Soviet Union countries. Turkey has long been of the status of a developing country reflecting the character that this suggests upon many of its industrial sectors with moves towards rapid development and technological and efficiency improvements. Policies for flagging out and an international ship registry, the Turkish straits and the ISM Code appear to be the most significant ones at the international level because they require urgent national and international solutions at present, which can only be decided by the Government. The main driving force of the shipping industry in Turkey has been the private sector and the dynamism of the free market conditions within the liberalised economy. The scrapping industry in Turkey has a distinctive place in the same market and continues to contribute positively to the economy.
