ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what cut in UK military expenditure, from its level in 1976, would be needed to bring the UK percentage of military expenditure in gross domestic product down to the average figure for the main European Allies, by 1981 Express the size of the cut as a percentage of UK military expenditure in 1976. It shows that the same concepts are used for all countries; and provides internationally standardized figures to national ones. There are a bewildering number of different figures around for military expenditure as a percentage of national product. For military expenditure, there are national figures, and figures on NATO definitions. The chapter describes what is the hidden additional burden to the economy of France and Germany represented by the fact that they have very large conscript forces to whom, especially in the case of France, they pay very low salaries.
