ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the main principles of several photonic signal processing (PSP) systems that enable the processing of Radio Waves (RW) in the frequency regions of RW, microwave, mm-wave or Tera-Hz waves in all-optical domains. Having identified the role of photonic processing of radio waves, it addresses the generation of RW, in particular the Tera-Hz waves from the higher spectral region of lightwaves. The chapter proposes the main operating principles of a number of simplified PRWSP structures using interferometer type Sagnac and dispersion via the use of chirped fiber Bragg grating. The chapter provides a brief designs and operations of multi-wavelength lasers based on semiconductor optical amplifier and fiber Raman amplification and equalization in fiber resonant structures. It discusses one very important advantage of PSP of radio wave signals is the possibility of parallelism of spatial and wavelength via the use of multiple wavelengths.
