ABSTRACT

Most proven wealth creators have been driven by fear of poverty, resentment over low status, or a strong desire to excel. The motivators were always there on the surface. Rising leaders have to dig deep inside for motivation. Successors need to awaken their internal drive to unleash their own creativity and that of the family enterprise, leading the system to rebirth. This is a different destiny from the founder’s destiny. The chapter considers what happens when seniors threaten to take away inheritance or financial support. One or more members of the rising generation will either rebel completely, leading to estrangement, or else they will be obedient yet not deliver anything and beyond what is asked of them—not the behavior of a future leader. China, in particular, must reckon with an additional driver that widens the gap between generations. Most family enterprises select a few members of the rising generation to develop and invite into the family enterprise.
