ABSTRACT

Open-ended questioning invites greater rapport and accuracy in the clinical interview. Although many clinicians start the interview with an open-ended question, this technique should be used liberally throughout the evaluation and treatment planning process. The utility of this technique is reflected in its incorporation into substance screening and commonly used psychotherapies. This technique is also associated with higher patient satisfaction and perceptions of quality.
