ABSTRACT
Patients’ use of emotional words are often clues to deeper content. This chapter demonstrates how the clinician can emphasize the patient’s affect in order to build a therapeutic relationship and obtain a richer history. This technique creates not only a more interesting, fulfilling interview but also helps the clinician more quickly identify the core issues precipitating the visit. Managing pitfalls with this technique is reviewed.
