ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an insight on the many facets of insurance cover which impinge on the responsibility of the library manager. As the role of libraries and indeed the role of the librarian change to meet social and economic demands, so does the need to consider the problems, catastrophes, difficulties and so on. As libraries differ as to the nature of their activities so their insurance requirements will differ. Computers are fast becoming an every day tool of trade and so it is imperative that specialist computer cover is sought immediately one thinks of purchasing the equipment for one needs back-up of hardware/software and to ensure cover for the recovery of important data stored. By liability one means the library’s legal responsibility to others, either third parties or employees and/or the library’s legal responsibility to the properties of others.
