ABSTRACT

This chapter fosuses on the identification of a model programme and the factors surrounding its formulation; by doing so it is intended to raise the awareness of library managers to this important issue. When attending an interview for the post of library assistant at the local library many candidates profess a ‘love of books’ and a liking for ‘meeting people’. The first step that the librarian needs to take is to ensure that their own situation has been examined and is relatively blameless. The personal safety of staff concerns all library authorities. This is obviously true when the member of staff is working on the premises, or in transit between their home and their place of work. Many librarians may have different ideas concerning training to combat the growing menace of violence and aggression in libraries.
