ABSTRACT

The relationship between leaders and teams has always been a fascinating area and it has also been subjected to considerable study. The accepted view of this relationship has been based on the premise of a leader being set apart from the followers. The rate of change is so fast that it is difficult to remember what life was like before. In effect it was the world recession at the beginning of the 1990s that finally put paid to ‘the good old days’, although those days were dying long before then. The new environment is one of bewildering change. This is as true of politics, business, education and medicine as it is of social issues, leisure, travel and sport. The rate of change is hectic. It has accelerated as a result of technological advances which are enabling people to achieve ambitions that have challenged the human race for centuries.
