ABSTRACT

John Adair believes that leadership is about a sense of direction. In stating this, he has put his finger on the nerve of leadership which is both essential and difficult. Vision lies at the heart of leadership and it is open to considerable misunderstanding, and some suspicion. There is a view that vision is only obtainable by a few talented individuals who possess some special insight. The example provided by leaders is crucial to the relationship with their teams. Their behaviour, the way they treat people, their reaction in a crisis, their attitude to ethical matters are all observed closely by followers. The subsequent commitment will depend significantly on the judgement of that observation although the significance will vary, depending on the nature and the nationality of the organization. Once it is clear which direction to take, this needs to be communicated to everyone. Communication is a key skill for leaders at all levels.
