ABSTRACT

The consumption of nutraceuticals is most common during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy to prevent disorders and nutrient deficiency. Glucosamine, ginseng, echinacea, folic acid, cod liver oil, omega-3, calcium-enriched orange juice, and green tea are some popular nutraceuticals. Birth defects of the spinal cord can lead to significant illness and mortality depending on the location and severity of the lesion. A cohort study consisting of 630 expecting mothers revealed that, upon regular consumption of fennel during pregnancy, the gestational age was shortened compared to women who did not consume fennel during the course of their pregnancy. Women and medicinal herbalists have prescribed raspberry tea, however, it should be avoided in the third trimester and by women with uterine scars and a history of preterm labor. Docosahexaenoic acid is abundant in fish and it is critical for the growth and development of the brain in children.
