ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Islamophobia, a form of xenophobia, and its impact on higher education. The historical construct of this global phenomenon and the types of Islamophobia are considered in the dialogue of the Muslim student experience, especially in regard to the stereotypes, marginalization, and exclusion these students experience on college campuses, including the effect on internalized oppression and identity development. Islamophobia is also discussed in terms of how it affects academic freedom and faculty relationships with students on college campuses. Within the contents of this chapter, the Muslim Ban is also examined as it relates to Islamophobia. Lastly, this chapter concludes with recommendations and implications for higher education policy, practice, and research.
