ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the situation in the member states of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP). Because of the threat that small arms and ammunition pose to the well-being and stability of these generally small nations, strict laws are in place to limit the supply, ownership, movement and use of firearms to security forces and to carefully vetted individuals who are perceived to have need and good character. The major agencies and organisations active in pursuing regional initiatives are Interpol, the Association of Caribbean Commissions of Police, the Caribbean Customs Law Enforcement Council (CCLEC) and the Regional Security System (RSS), which all agree on the need for better information-sharing. These organisations are currently trying to develop faster, cheaper, safer and more effective means of communication to allow for better sharing of intelligence on drug trafficking, organised crime, gunrunning and violence.
