ABSTRACT
Any patient who wants treatment in hospital can ask his or her GP or psychiatrist and, if there is medical agreement that this is necessary, the patient will be admitted. Such patients are known as voluntary patients or ‘informal’ patients. They can discharge themselves whenever they want to do so, but there are certain circumstances in which their doctor can detain them (see section 5).
