ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of the field research. It analyses the two Polish ports of Gdynia and Gdansk. The Baltic Container Terminal in Gdynia (BCT) is organised into the three departments of “Marketing and Sales”, “Operations and Technical Matters” and “Finance”. Strategies in the BCT are mainly designed and generated by senior internal experts. If external consultants are asked for their opinion then it is by invitation of the Terminal and not forced upon management by investors or other stakeholders. When scanning the external environment, the BCT strategists commonly use the PEST-analysis. To analyse the external competitive industry environment Porter’s five forces model is usually applied. In the BCT, officials feel that strategy is a vital issue and not just a luxury. They claim that it has a strong impact in forcing them into a logical approach to decision-making.
