ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how crime prevention within the Home Office works. It examines those Home Office departments and the particular units connected to crime prevention policy and research by having crime/criminality prevention as a part of their remit. The chapter also examines three directorates along with the various components responsible for crime prevention. They included the research and statistics directorate, the criminal policy directorate, and the police directorate. The programme development unit is responsible for the development, funding, monitoring and evaluation of innovative local projects, particularly in relation to crime and criminal justice issues. The Criminal Policy Directorate is responsible for various matters including “policy on reducing crime and criminality”. Their role is to advise other government departments and Government on research and policy work. The Crime Prevention Unit’s task was to promote preventive action against crime.
