ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a qualitative evaluation study of that project Under the Healthy, Wealthy and Wise (HWW) initiative a small community team was given the task of mobilising the local elderly population to lead full and active lives. Cinderella was staged on this occasion by participants in HWW, a community project for older people living in the Ely area of Cardiff. HWW was evaluated using a combination of research methods, with special emphasis on qualitative techniques. HWW lasted for just over three years during which it was jointly funded by the county council, the Welsh Office, the local health authority and Age Concern. The chapter examines the main findings of the HWW investigation, starting with a profile of participants and moving on to identify some of the pleasures and problems of being a 'wrinkly'. The HWW participants ranged from the relatively fit and healthy through to the chronically infirm.
