ABSTRACT

A centrifuge modelling test is performed to study the deformation behaviour of western artificial island of the HZMB (Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao Bridge). The island is designed for tunnels and constructed on soft ground improved by sand compaction piles (SCP) using lattice type steel plate piles. The test includes 2 phases, the first investigates stability of the island from its formation till tunnel pit excavation, and the second studies the long-term deformation development of the island. According to the results, major settlement occurs for the sloped embankment of artificial island from its formation till tunnel pit excavation, the pit and the cofferdam structure are stable during excavation. Also, the prediction is made of post-construction deformation for the artificial island as well as the tunnel.
