ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the problems lone mothers face in different types of housing, how they attempt to solve their problems and whether these solutions are effective. It focuses on the housing needs of lone mothers. The chapter shows that many lone mothers have to move out of their matrimonial home, and have to move around frequently because of they lack sufficient resources to secure stable accommodation. It also focuses on lone mothers' experience in the private housing market. The chapter deals with looking at the accessibility of public housing on compassionate grounds, since this is one of the major sources of public housing for lone mothers. It explores the difficulties for lone mothers of applying for other types of social housing such as public rented housing, the Home Ownership Scheme, and the Home Purchase Loan Scheme. Applying for public housing on compassionate grounds is one of the major strategies used by low income lone mothers to solve their housing problems.
