ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the general problems arising from the failure of urban planning in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long new towns. Of course, women are not the only victims in the failure of new town planning. All people, whether male or female, young or old, working class or middle class, are affected some way or other. Regarding transport to the city centre, the main complaint is about traffic jams on the Tuen Mun Highway. Tuen Mun is about 20 miles, and Yuen Long about 25 miles, from the city centre. Transportation between these new towns and the city centre mainly relies on the Tuen Mun Highway which is far from adequate in meeting the needs in these new towns. In general, traffic design is geared toward meeting residents's needs in travelling to the work place, so that transportation within the new towns has been neglected.
