ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an in-depth and comprehensive overview on the basis of which the profession's role, tasks and functions can be defined. The profession of social work is most suited to assist local populations to move towards democratic processes and critical policy analysis, plan community development approaches and facilitate grass roots movements to work closely with the Government. Specialists and experts from schools of social work, institutes of social policy and development agencies from abroad either under the auspices of their universities, professional associations or Governments, would be very welcome to share their experiences, knowledge and skills. A resolute determination and patience, as well as range of versatile professional skills, go a long way in seeing the fruition of programmes. The institutions of social work education and professional organizations of social workers at the national, regional and international levels can be directly involved in human rights work, or projects of peace-building and by sending experts for technical co-operation.
