ABSTRACT

Most Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) recognize that their primary role is to serve the community in which they are working in order to advance the conditions of that society. Development assistance NGOs and aid workers from the north often work in partnership with local NGOs, and have a strong record in providing assistance to address basic needs through small-scale activities run on a participatory basis. Educational and organizational activities undertaken by many NGOs have the effect of empowering local communities, sectoral alliances, and marginalized groups of society. A review of the literature dealing with the theory and practice of managing human resources, and the practice of pre-departure briefing, highlights a number of themes which have a contemporary practical application for NGOs. The World Bank acknowledges the important role that NGOs play in reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development.
