ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the construction demand in China and explores the consequent opportunities for foreign construction companies. It analyzes foreign participation and the problems encountered in the Chinese market, and presents recommendations on future co-operation between the Chinese and foreign contractors. The chapter outlines that the major foreign participation in Chinese construction usually take the form of project management, supervision and training of local staff and consultancy services, usually in the fields of power generation, energy exploration, transportation, telecommunication and housing. Energy Development foreign investment has been sought to develop coal mining. Major investment is planned which, together with imported plant and technology, is aimed to bring about the required expansion in generating capacity. In order to guarantee the quality and the efficiency of construction projects, foreign contractors have been employed as project managers to look after the projects, particularly joint venture projects. The turnkey contractor will develop the project from inception to completion.
