ABSTRACT

The glass industry is amongst the important sectors of the Turkish economy since it is both internationally competitive and has high social and economic impact. Arguably the most important factor that can be considered as a ‘chance’ event for the Turkish glass industry is the tradition of glassmaking in the lands of Anatolia throughout the ages. As far as the home demand conditions are concerned, the Turkish glass industry has the advantage of having a large, rapidly growing and dynamic domestic market. An interesting area concerns the role the government plays in the case of the Turkish glass industry. Although founded by the attempts of the government, however, Sisecam has been a private company acting quite independently from the government, and certainly is far from being similar to a state enterprise. Especially in the beginning, the role of government is more direct in the Turkish glass industry than Michael Porter assumes in his diamond framework.
