ABSTRACT

The beginning of the 1990s was an important turning point for the Turkish construction industry. An overall evaluation for the factor conditions reveals a relatively advantageous position for the Turkish construction industry. An enormous demand for construction emerged there and Turkish contractors were again lucky to enjoy the advantages stemming from geographical and cultural proximity. Turkish firms are not amongst the important competitors in the engineering design and consultancy services industry, and the construction equipment industry is mainly dominated by the foreign affiliates of a few transnational companies. A favourable chance event for the Turkish construction industry took place more recently with the disintegration of the USSR. The Turkish government has provided support to the contractors from time to time. Like in the glass industry, managerial capabilities of Turkish contractors can be considered among the most important strengths of the Turkish construction industry.
