ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 continues the discussion of theories, methods, and approaches for effective contemporary communication and interviewing that was begun in Chapter 6. Previously the book discussed (inter alia):

- how persons who receive services perceive different helping professions and how personal and social contexts affect communication

- similarities and differences in communication styles

- paternalistic, medical, social and participatory models of communication

- therapeutic relationships, rapport, empathy, the search for meaning (Frankl, 2011, 1969), constructing and re-constructing meaning (Neimeyer, 2009), loss (Kubler-Ross, 1969; Stroebe and Schut, 1999, 2001), person-centred theory (Rogers 1951), psychodynamic theory, including transference and counter-transference (Freud, 1936, 1986)

- contributions of experts by experience (Beresford, 2016)

Chapter 11 presents additional communication approaches and situations that rely to a great extent for their success on the practitioner’s skills within multi-professional practice. The discussion provides a brief contextual overview, considers communication approaches for individuals who experience diabetes, addictions, or obesity, and also presents strategies for overcoming communication blockages.
