ABSTRACT

Chapter 19, the final chapter, sums up the book’s key messages that were discussed in previous chapters. The book’s conclusion asserts that developing good communication and interviewing skills is an ongoing task that can never be completed, because there will always be more knowledge and experience to acquire. Knowledge does not stand still; learning from research and practice expands professional practitioners’ knowledge base that may prompt them to revise and discard some previously trusted knowledge. Professional practitioners build their incremental knowledge of communication not by discounting all ‘old’ knowledge but by reviewing their growing understanding of how intersectionality, social constructs, and the ecological approach influence communication. Communication is important as a fundamental skill. Readers are encouraged to embark on their own professional journeys to develop their communication and interviewing skills.
