Herkomer (1849-1914) was bom at Waal in Bavaria; his family emigrated to America in 1851 but returned in 1857 and settled in England at Southampton. Herkomer entered Southampton School of Art at fourteen, and after a brief period studying at the Munich Academy (1865), entered the South Kensington art schools in 1866. In 1869 his work was accepted by the Graphic and for the RA, and a painting of a Bavarian village scene fetched £500 at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1873. In 1875 his painting The Last Muster: Sunday at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, was a sensation at the RA. It sold for £1,200.
