ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part discusses the direction research has taken from the focus on financial and relational independence to a focus on greater diversity, reflecting the community. It provides a comprehensive overview of how human and social capital has been conceptualised and operationalised in the literature, and the reasons underpinning their association with the effectiveness of the firm. The part examines the tradition of rhetoric – and explores the importance of emotion in the communication of strategy. It also explores the negative underbelly of organisations – bullying and harassment and describes a framework for conceptualising the contextual variables that are likely to impact workplace bullying – and provide an agenda for research in this field. The part outlines the evidence base for mindfulness programs in the workplace and their effects on different well-being outcomes.
