Solving the Problems of Refugees in Africa
Protection of refugees covers a wide range of issues and is required in virtually all situations. Physical protection is against exploitation and forceful involvement of refugees in illegal activities, maltreatment during arrest for offences committed, assault by nationals and refugees alike, military incursions over refugee settlements, and assassination attempts. Survival of refugees and their satisfactory adjustment to life in the new environment is based on: assurances of their subsistence needs; access to health, education and employment; and enjoyment of their fundamental freedoms, including the ability to integrate into the community of the country of asylum. Relief measures are directed essentially for a large influx of rural dwellers. They are employed at the time of reception of refugees to keep them alive at all costs while arrangements are being made for their settlement in the country of asylum.
