ABSTRACT

The main character was tasked with defeating mysterious creatures in a strange land to restore the life of his lover. Unlike other boss-focused games out there, Shadow of the Colossus featured a hub, in the form of the environment itself. The environmental design painted a land that any semblance of a culture has long since been destroyed. The player had the option of exploring simply to see the sights and hunt down lizards that would enhance the grip meter. A core concept behind boss-focused game design is the fact that the player's moveset does not change over the course of play. Getting through a fight required the player to deal with the random actions of the colossi while trying to get at the weak points.
