ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that research gap by bringing together existing studies in the areas, assessing current levels of knowledge and identifying avenues for future research. It demonstrates that existing research focused on the role of the board in sport organisations is limited. In the corporate governance literature, researchers have analysed the role of individual directors on boards. The inconsistency of previous research has led to a consensus in the mainstream governance literature that it is too simplistic to focus solely on board structures when assessing board performance. The chapter discusses the current state of knowledge with regard to board roles and board structure and composition in the sport setting and has drawn comparisons with the corporate sector. It also discusses the limited body of literature shows sport organisations to be falling short of the standards set in the corporate sector with regard to key issues such as board independence and diversity.
