ABSTRACT

Duan Kewen was first detained in 1951 and, after being in several centres and prisons, spent eighteen and a half years to 1975 in the Fushun prison. He recounted his experiences in the New York Chinese language newspaper Shijie Ribao as a series of articles 28 of which were later re-published in Taiwan in book form. In so far as Duan speaks of the reasons for his initial detention and subsequent sentence to long-term imprisonment, he does so in his articles defensively. There is a sense of relief in Duan's writing as he goes on to record Dai Li's accidental death in 1946 and of how he grasped the opportunity to leave the secret service organization. Resentment and bitterness come through strongly as Duan describes the treatment he received from February 1951 when he was arrested until the eve of his arrival at Fushun in September 1956. Although he enjoyed them, he writes sceptically of some aspects.
