ABSTRACT

In order to increase market share, companies need to design more energy efficient and cleaner vessels to meet new environmental regulations and increased societal expectations. Discovering better designs, faster for such complex engineering systems requires easy-to-use CAE simulation solutions with fast turnaround time. But even more so, the engineering process itself should allow automated design space exploration to drive innovation in the form of better performing vessels and offshore platforms that are guaranteed to meet current and future regulatory requirements. This paper will demonstrate state of the art technology for simulation driven design of a typical offshore supply vessel. Firstly industry trends driving the need for innovation and automated design space exploration are reviewed. Next the methodology for setting up an automated simulation driven workflow is explained, including an overview of the parametric CAD preparation process, the CFD simulation approach for evaluating vessel performance, and the intelligent search technology employed to determine optimal designs. Finally, results of a multiobjective design space exploration study are presented.
