ABSTRACT

With environmental concerns becoming the most important issue which the industry is facing today, there exists a strong demand for Installing Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) for both existing and manufacturing ships. Although the energy saving effect of post-ESDs are not as obvious as pre-ESDs, the structures of post-ESDs, such as rudder bulb and rudder fins, are much simpler and easier to be fixed on the ship. This paper focuses on designing a combined ESD with rudder bulb and thrust fins for a larger bulk carrier by incorporating the parameterized modeling software CAESES and STARCCM+. Genetic algorithm NSGA-II is involved to optimize the ESD intelligently. After calculating hundreds of schemes, an optimal scheme which has more than 1% energy saving effect is obtained and the result is validated by model test in SSSRI’s towing tank.
