ABSTRACT

A number of studies indicate student liking for the lecture. The lecture has often been viewed as a method which stands on its own, it is possible to use the lecture as one facet of a systematic approach. The effectiveness of such a systematic approach does not necessarily indicate the effectiveness of the lecture, but it does show that it can be incorporated into a total system which contains a variety of techniques designed to promote learning. It is interesting to note that when recorded presentations like tape/slide material or audio-tapes were used as a lecture substitute or as recorded versions of lectures, they were not well received. This emerges clearly from a study of the replacement of lectures by tape/slide presentations in a first-year undergraduate course “Structures of Atoms”, and from the fact that students find tape/slide useful for individual work.
