ABSTRACT

Advancing the intellectual and professional capacity of individual students within a constructive campus environment. Enhancing human capacity in society at large through training, research and service. Increasing social justice through greater equality of opportunity to obtain an advanced education. Advancing learning for its own sake through science, scholarship and creative arts; and for the sake of public interest and consumption. Higher education is now open to all who wish to pursue it, yet many teachers act as though they are still dealing with the privileged few who in the past pursued learning for its own sake. This type of student, even if subjected to an amount of bad teaching could survive principally because they soon learnt how to overcome their own problems. In thinking about the education of students, the teacher needs not only to be told about possible ways of proceeding, he needs encouragement and positive help.
