ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the reusability of Object Oriented components makes them very amenable to being shared in a co-ordinated way across systems and other products of software development. It deals with the limited scope for sharing the components of current technology. Data Management is a familiar example of a more general approach called Information Resource Management (IRM). IRM manages information resources for use in information products that meet business needs. Data management based on conventional technology manages two types of asset, one logical and the other physical. The reusability of objects comes from three mutually reinforcing features of object orientation. Object Orientation is an enabling technology. It pushes back limits on what can be shared, on the ease of making assets reusable, and on actually reusing them. Objected Oriented business analysis techniques identify objects, their behaviour and the rules which govern them.
