ABSTRACT

Economics and political science have each dealt with different areas and have utilized different approaches in their analyses. Political science has worked to establish ‘good government’, tending to base the existence of such governance structures on good moral principles. The theory of public choice took the economic approach over to the study of politics. The basic assumption of the public choice approach to politics is that most people are primarily interested in themselves and their families, and only secondarily interested in broader considerations. The different ways of looking at politics has led to the development of a new and radically different discipline. It uses the basic tools of economics to examine issues in politics. Normal politicians can easily convince themselves that policies which could help them keep their jobs are in accord with the good, the true, and the beautiful.
