ABSTRACT

Team dynamics refer to everything that happens when people come together in teams. Since the early 20th century there has been considerable research to understand what happens when individuals collectively come together. In this chapter we will discuss some of the methods that can be used to gain a better insight into teams. Various forms of research into social psychology and group dynamics has led to a wide variety of theories that provide us with an understanding of teams and offer practical perspectives to enhance their performance. Team research requires curiosity and a detailed attention or “tuning in” to the reality that is being scrutinised. Such “tuning in” links in well with the communication skill of active listening that we discuss at the end of the chapter.
