ABSTRACT

Now you have a better understanding of what makes people want to participate in teams, you might ask: What keeps a team together? We could start by saying it is the goal of getting things done, but there are other things at play too. Goals are, of course, an important part of motivation but it is clear that there is something else that will keep the team together and this “something” is the team’s cohesion. Cohesion is not easy to explain and no single definition can cover everything the idea entails; we are not going to attempt to define it too rigorously nor limit the definition. Instead, we will take a look at teams and their development, go a little deeper into outlining the differences between groups and teams, and discuss the functions of teams in organisations. Towards the end of the chapter, we will explore the basis for the appropriate expression of emotion within a team setting; something that takes into account different character types.
